Your furry friend’s safety is incredibly important. For that reason, in the Ringwood Dogs Woof Wagon we have crash tested crates fitted to keep our own and our client’s dogs safe. Therefore, when you travel with your dog, you must consider their safety, the Highway Code and the weather. Follow our handy guide to help your dog stay safe in the car.
According to research, two out of three drivers are unaware that not restraining their dog in the car could land them in trouble. Certainly, driving with an unrestrained dog could result in a huge fine, several points on their license and potentially cause serious injury.
To help keep you and your dog safe when traveling. Take a look at our 5 top tips to keep safe in the car.
Keeping Your Dog Safe in the Car
- Firstly, don’t allow your dog to ride with its head out of the window. You could be risking injury to your dog and distraction to other drivers on the road.
- Ensure your dog is suitably restrained in the car. You can ensure this by using a dog seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog crate or a dog guard. (Highway Code states “When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly.” Rule 57)
- Always carry a large water bottle to keep your dog hydrated, or to help cool your dog down quickly.
- Sun shades on the windows can help keep your dog cool on hot days. Remember, NEVER EVER leave your dog in the car. They can quickly overheat which can prove fatal to your dog.
- Finally, have your dog’s blanket, toy and favourite chew with them on the journey to keep them entertained and to give your dog a sense of familiarity.
