Keep your Dog safe in the Garden

Training Puppy Training Courses at Ringwood Dogs

Here is a guide for keeping your dog safe and happy in the garden and be aware of potential dangers hiding in your garden.

Escape Routes
Dogs are inquisitive by nature so check any potential escape routes around the garden that they might be able to venture through. A fence panel blown out by the winter wind or a worn hole under the fence can pose an escape risk to your pet. Check these areas and block off any holes and gaps that your pup could squeeze through.

Poisonous Plants
Many gardeners start planting in spring but some of these plants can be toxic for your dog. Things like spring bulbs, which could be chewed like a ball, and lilies can pose a huge health risk to your dog. Gardeners World have lists and tips to help you choose plants for your dog to enjoy.
Check out the Dogs Trusts handy list to make sure your garden is safe for your dog.

Mushrooms and Toadstools
With the damp winter over winter mushroom and toadstools have thrived, popping up on your lawn and in shady spots in your garden. If eaten, these can be highly toxic to dogs and cause life-threatening health issues. Check your garden often and make sure to keep your dog away from any area where mushrooms grow when out on walks.

Garden Chemicals and Poisons
Pesticides and weed killers can be toxic to your pets, whether consumed or just licked. Symptoms can vary from sickness to organ failure if left untreated so ensure your garden is clear of any of these chemicals. Reduce the use of slug repellent, rat poisons and weed killers during the spring months so your pup doesn’t accidentally eat or roll in them.
