Top Tips for New Puppy Owners

Here are 10 Top Tips for new puppy owners:

Get your puppy chipped
By law, your pet should be microchipped with your current address and phone number. It is also the law to have a dog tag that includes your surname, contact number and address.

Decide the rules
Make sure everyone in the house is on the same page when it comes to training your puppy. Much like a child, it can be confusing for your pup to be told different things.

Get them used to health checks
Get your puppy used to handling from day one! This doesn’t just mean cuddles. Making sure your pet is happy to have their paws, teeth and eyes checked can be important to their health as they get older.

Socialising is key
Socialise your puppy with other dogs when they are fully vaccinated. You may want to start small with a friend’s dog, so they can build their confidence up. It might be a good idea to avoid the dog park until they are feeling braver! A bad experience with a rude canine can harm your puppy’s socialising skills.

Slow introductions
Introduce your puppy to new people and new experiences slowly, letting them get used to strange things in their own time. Taking them to places that allow dogs inside, like some pubs and shops such as Pets at Home, are another great way to give your puppy new experiences.

Train from the start
Reward good behaviour and do not acknowledge bad behaviour from day one. It’s great to begin a training class once they are old enough for guided help and extra socialising opportunities for your puppy.

Don’t encourage behaviour you might regret!
Letting your puppy jump on you might be cute when they’re young but they do get bigger, especially the larger breeds.

Keep your puppy engaged
A bored puppy can cause a lot of trouble. Make sure you pick up anything you don’t want chewed and keep them out of puppy’s reach. Provide toys for them to play with and keep puppy teething rings handy!

Learn to be quicker
You’ll be surprised how quickly your puppy can get into mischief or make a mess. If your puppy looks like they need to go to toilet don’t hesitate to take them outside as quickly as you can!

Take lots of photos!
Puppies grow so quickly! Don’t forget to take lots of photos of them as they grow.
