I have been seeing lots of owners recently who require help regarding recall for their working dog. They find their dog gets distracted on walks, doesn’t listen to them, chases things or busy themselves with much more interesting things than their owners until they decide to come back!
The problem (or sometimes not a problem) with owning a working dog is that these dogs will always look for work every time they leave their owner’s front door. Some working dogs will go to owners (employers) who will have amazing jobs lined up for them. Some working dogs will go to owners (employers) who may not have jobs lined up for them but make sure they “create a job” for them which is just as good. And some working dogs go to owners simply as a beloved pet.
The working dogs that are expected to be just your regular pet will often seek their own self employment – after all, any job is better than no job. So they set up business themselves in the form of chasing birds, sniffing, flushing, guarding, barking and ignoring their owners and can be quite happy bumbling along at their self-employed job. Unfortunately for some “naughty” dogs, they take on the wrong job because there is just no other suitable work available – and any job is better than no job…..
Be a good employer (owner) and “give your dog a job” when out walking in the form of training, games, flirt toys, scent exercises. Then you’ll find you’re less likely to lose your dog to self-employment.
